If you are a side sleeper a plush to medium firmness mattress, that provides support for your neck and back is better. A mattress that is too firm will put a lot pressure on your back, neck, and shoulders. 

Stomach Sleeper

A stomach sleeper needs equal support  across the entire body.  The top priority should be support; A mattress on the firm side of the spectrum is better. 

Back Sleeper

 A back sleeper can choose any mattress from plush to firm as long as it provides enough support on your back to avoid  lower back pain.
